Kokanee salmon are common in Lake Tahoe. Closely related to the better known sockey, they are common to many freshwater lakes in the western United States and western provinces of Canada.
Although ranking behind the beloved Tahoe bears, the Kokanee are somewhat of an icon in the Tahoe region - they are the focus of many fishing charters in the lake, they have a marathon and at least two streets named after them.
The Kokanee's October spawning runs at Taylor Creek are locally famous.
